How to Train Your Dog: 5 Essential Commands

Training your dog isn’t just about obedience — it’s about communication, safety, and building a strong bond. These five commands form the foundation of a well-mannered dog.

Before You Start

  • Keep sessions short: 5–10 minutes max
  • Use high-value treats (small, soft, and smelly)
  • Train in a quiet environment first, then add distractions
  • Always end on a positive note
  • Be consistent with your words and hand signals

1. Sit

The easiest and most useful command to teach first.

How to teach it:

  1. Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose
  2. Slowly move your hand up — their bottom will naturally lower
  3. The moment they sit, say “Sit,” give the treat, and praise
  4. Repeat 10–15 times per session

2. Stay

Essential for safety and impulse control.

How to teach it:

  1. Ask your dog to sit
  2. Open your palm toward them and say “Stay”
  3. Take one step back. If they stay, reward
  4. Gradually increase distance and duration
  5. Always release with a word like “OK” or “Free”

3. Come (Recall)

The most important safety command — it can save your dog’s life.

How to teach it:

  1. Put your dog on a long leash
  2. Crouch down and say “Come” in an excited voice
  3. When they come to you, reward generously
  4. Never call your dog to you for punishment
  5. Practice in increasingly distracting environments

4. Down (Lie Down)

Helpful for calm behavior and settling.

How to teach it:

  1. Start with your dog in a sit position
  2. Hold a treat in front of their nose, then slowly lower it to the floor
  3. Slide the treat along the floor away from them — they’ll follow into a down
  4. Say “Down,” treat, and praise the moment they’re lying flat

5. Leave It

Prevents your dog from picking up dangerous items.

How to teach it:

  1. Place a treat in both hands
  2. Show one closed fist with a treat — say “Leave it”
  3. Wait for them to stop sniffing, licking, or pawing
  4. When they look away, reward with the treat from the OTHER hand
  5. Gradually increase difficulty with treats on the floor

Common Mistakes

  • Training too long — dogs lose focus after 10 minutes
  • Repeating commands — say it once, then guide with body language
  • Punishing mistakes — this creates fear, not learning
  • Inconsistent rules — everyone in the household must use the same commands

Patience and consistency are the keys to successful training. Every dog learns at their own pace, so celebrate small wins along the way.
