Why "1 dog year = 7 human years" is wrong
The 7-to-1 rule is a marketing simplification from the 1950s, not a scientific finding. Modern veterinary research shows dogs mature very fast in their first two years and then slow dramatically — and the rate of aging depends on body size. Small dogs age slower in adulthood than giant breeds.
A 1-year-old dog is the developmental equivalent of a 15-year-old human, regardless of size. By age 2, your dog is around 24 in human years. After that, every additional dog year equals 4 human years for small breeds, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7 for giant breeds. This calculator uses that model.

Why do small dogs live longer than big dogs? +
Larger breeds reach full size faster and experience accelerated cellular aging. A Great Dane is geriatric by 6–7 years; a Chihuahua is barely middle-aged at 8. The leading hypothesis is that rapid growth in puppyhood comes at a longevity cost — bigger dogs essentially burn through their lifespan faster.
